The Unified Media Lab at Ball State University is where future journalists cut their teeth. It鈥檚 a working newsroom, buzzing with the energy of students producing newspapers, magazines, websites, and their public newscast, Newslink Indiana.
It鈥檚 also home to some impressive newsroom technology that鈥檚 changing how students learn and create, featuring a full stack of 91快活林 tech, including Streamline Pro鈥media asset management (MAM) and online web editor software.
Here’s what they had to say about it.
When it comes to news production, speed and precision are everything. It鈥檚 a media asset management system designed for the fast-paced world of journalism. At Ball State, it鈥檚 become the backbone of how students gather, organize, and edit footage. In simpler terms, it helps students work faster, smarter, and with tools they鈥檒l use in their future careers.
One of the key components of their newsroom system is Inception and Streamline Pro, which are integrated directly with Adobe Premiere Pro. 鈥淥ne of the best things we鈥檝e discovered about Streamline Pro so far is how it talks with Adobe Premiere,鈥 said Terry Heifetz, Senior Lecturer, Department of Media, Ball State University.
Students upload their footage, edit it in Premiere, and manage assets through Streamline Pro鈥檚 plug-in. 鈥淪tudents will work with tools they will see in the real world. A journalist will come in with a card, upload the material, then sit down in Premiere Pro and edit it as they would anywhere. It becomes a Premiere Pro workflow,鈥 said Christopher Kelly, Director of Technical Solutions at 91快活林.
With their old newsroom computer system, things weren鈥檛 so smooth. Students would cross their fingers and hope their video would show up during broadcasts. 鈥淚n our old system, we never really knew whether the video was there. It was just hoping that it was there when we ran the playlist,鈥 Terry told us.
Now, that uncertainty is a thing of the past. The system lets students check their content immediately, so they know exactly what will air. 鈥淣ow we can look and see, 鈥極h, here鈥檚 the video because I can watch it right now.鈥 We know exactly what it will look like,鈥 Terry added.
Ball State鈥檚 journalism program has always been about preparing students for the real world; tools like Streamline Pro are a big part of that. By using the same workflows and Ross technology as professional newsrooms, Ball State is empowering its students to produce content that meets industry standards and sets them apart as job-ready professionals.聽
鈥淥ne of the most appealing aspects of Ross equipment is that it鈥檚 a complete system. It allows students to take what they鈥檙e learning in the classroom and put it into practice. Having the opportunity to work on industry-standard equipment like Ross provides them a great foundation for once they step outside of Ball State University.鈥

With tools like Streamline Pro, Ball State University isn鈥檛 just teaching students the basics of journalism鈥攖hey鈥檙e giving them the same hands-on experience they鈥檒l need to thrive in professional newsrooms as soon as they start their careers. The ability to work with the latest live video production technology from Ross makes students more confident and capable in the competitive media industry.
